Technical Writing: Process Description


Panel Board Assembly

Introduction

     This process description gives instructions on how to assemble a panel board. A panel board is used to distribute electrical power in homes, buildings, or any area that requires power distribution. A standard electrical panel board is equipped with circuit breakers or switches, a neutral, and a ground bar. To conduct electrical power throughout a panel board, different variations of copper (tin plated or silver plated) are used and aluminum.



Assembly
 

     The foundation of a panel board begins with two steel rails of equal length. If the rails are galvanized, they must be de-burred to reduce the hazard of sharp edges. Painted rails do not have to go through this process. The two rails are attached together with metal cross ties in the center and chassis brackets on the top and bottom ends. 3 one inch insulator post are attached to each cross tie. Next, the aluminum or copper buss bar is attached to the insulator post. To attach the buss bar to the insulator post, the buss bar must be countersunk according to the position of the insulator post for proper fit. Next, the connectors are attached to the buss bar. Connectors will vary according circuit breaker or switch. The connectors must also be made of the same material as the buss bar. Once the connectors are attached, the circuit breakers or switches are attached to the connectors. When using circuit breakers, brackets must also be attached to the rails to properly support the circuit breakers. Switches do not require support brackets. Finally, the neutral and ground bar is attached and the pane board is ready to be placed inside of its containment box.

Conclusion

     These instructions are a guide to assist with the proper assembly of electrical panel boards. When assembled properly, electrical power can be distributed to designated locations without incident.
